New Bulgarian University is an academic institution that works for the modernisation of the higher education in dialogue with the traditions. The University provides opportunities for teaching, oriented to the individual personality - contemporary forms of teaching, widening the cultural horizon, rich in cognition and quickly adaptable to the educational and professional requirements of the society.
The academic profile of the University unites social sciences and the humanitarian ones, sciences for communication and the Arts.
The interdisciplinary academic circles, the atmosphere of cooperation among tutors and students as well as the innovative approach in education develop the individuality of the students, their initiative and critic way of thinking.
On the occasion of the Jubilee of New Bulgarian University related to the decade since its inauguration, in 2001 Raina Kabaivanska made a Master class of hers for the first time in Bulgaria. Participants, who completed the Master class in opera singing, performed in a concert with the special participation of the opera Prima.
Basic organisers of the Master class in opera singing of Raina Kabaivanska are the Faculty for Continuing Education and ‘Music Arts’ Department to the New Bulgarian University.


RAINA KABAIVANSKA

Raina Kabaivanska was born in Bulgaria. Graduated opera singing and piano playing at the State Academy of Music. Specialised in Itay with Zita Fumagalli.
Her debut in 1961 at ‘La Scala’ sets the start of a brilliant career at the most significant opera theatres in the world: from Paris to Rome and Madrid, from Metropolitan in New York to Bolshoi Theatre in Moscow, from Salzburg to Venice, from Covent Garden in London to Teatro San Carlo in Naples, from Philadelphia to Monaco and Hamburg, from Carnegie Hall in New York to Teatro Colon in Buenos Aires.
Her repertory has been enriched with works by Verdi /’Don Carlo’, ‘Otello’, ‘Falstaff’, ‘La Traviata’, ‘Il Trovatore’, ‘La Forza del Destino’, ‘I Vespri Siciliani’, ‘Ernani’, ‘Requiem’/ Puccini /in the parts of Madama Butterfly, Tosca, Manon Lescaut/, Wagner /‘Rienzi’/, Cilea /‘Adriana Lecouvreur’/, Donizetti /’Roberto Devereux’/, Leoncavallo /’Pagliacci’/, Gounod /’Faustus’/, Massenet /’Manon’/, Catallani /’La Wally’/, Tchaikovsky /’Queen of Spades‘/, ‘Evgeni Onegin’’/, Strauss /’Capriccio’/ Zandonai /’Francesca da Rimini’/ Spontini /‘La Vestalle’/, Gluck /‘Armide’/, Janacek ‘The Macropoulos Case’/, Lehar /’La Vedova Allegra /, Britten /.’Il Giro di Vite’/

‘The Human Voice’ by Poulenc, ‘The Woman in the Dark’ of Kurt Weil, ‘Janufa’ by Janacek are among the most recent works in Raina Kabaivanska’s repertory. Facing these new challenges is a proof of a personality, linked with continuous education, research and self-improvement.
A lot of recognitions and awards outline her impressive career in regard of activiies and mastership: Bellini - 1965, Viotti d’Oro - 1970, Puccini - 1978, Illica - 1979, Monteverdi - 1980, the Award of Academia ‘Medicci’ - Lorenzo di Magnifico - Florence - 1990, the Grand Prix ‘A Life, Dedicated to the Music’ - Venice - 2000 and many others.
Raina Kabaivanska is a professor at the Academy of Music ‘Chigiana’ - Italy. Jury member of many prestigious competitions. Leads master classes for vocal performers from all over the world in Spain, Italy, France. She has established a foundation in Bulgaria, bearing her name, supporting the cultural and moral development of gifted Bulgarian children-orphans.
Raina Kabaivanska is Doctor Honoris Causa and a Professor of Honour at the New Bulgarian University.

MASTER CLASS
Regulations:
The master class in opera singing will be held from 12th to 22nd October, 2002 at ‘Bulgaria’ Chamber Hall /Sofia/;
Eligibility for participation - students and professionals /up to 32 years old/ from Bulgaria and abroad;
The candidates submit a repertory of five arias from the Baroque to 20th century for the competitive audition and for work during the master class. The repertory is subject of approval or changes by Raina Kabaivanska;
The selection of the candidates will be held on 12th October, 2002 by an audition headed by Raina Kabaivanska. The audition includes a performance from the candidate’s repertory - one of the five arias according to the choice of the candidate and one aria, chosen by Raina Kabaivanska. The foreign candidates may take part in the selection by correspondence, sending their performances on video, -audio tapes or CD together with the required documents to the address, mentioned below;
Ten /10/ active participants will be approved for the master class. After the audition, course participants might be approved as well, that will have the possibility for work according to the pedagogue’s opinion. The master class will be open for listeners and audience;
Pianists-accompanists and a tutor in Italian language will be at the disposal of the participants for the duration of the master class. The participants may use the services of their personal accompanists if they wish;
The master class will end on 24th October, 2002 at ‘Bulgaria’ Hall, by a concert of the most successful performers with the special participation of Raina Kabaivanska and to the accompaniment of the Sofia Philharmonic Orchestra.
The active participants who have completed the master class receive a certificate.

For the foreign candidates: 31st August, 2002

The scholarship students of ‘Raina Kabaivanska’ Foundation take part in the audition and the master class free of charge.
